Poetry is good for the soul. It allows writers to express their emotions and readers to feel that they are not alone in this world. It connects people and is a form of art like no other. In no specific order (because why compare people who are all talented?), here are five black poets you need to know.

*Maya Angelou
A classic writer who defined what it means to be a strong black woman in the civil rights movement. She has Witten autobiographies, poems and even has been in movies and TV shows. Her work will forever live on and will be shared in schools and throughout families. I wish I knew how legendary she was when I first was introduced to her in elementary school.

*R.H Sin (@r.h.sin)
Sin was one of the first poets who made me fall in love with poetry. He writes about self-love, heartbreak, his marriage and so much more. With 21 books already out, he does not plan on stopping anytime soon. He has brought me to tears, made me smile, and made me want to throw the book because he wrote something I would rather not to relate to, but unfortunately did. He is a highly talented man and deserves every piece of recognition he gets.

*Samantha King Holmes (@Samantha.king.holmes)
Samantha is married to R.H Sin and they have a kid together. If you need a book to read after you get your heart broken, her “Born to Love, Cursed to Feel” is perfect. She accurately displays emotions through her writing and will make it seem as if she was there throughout all your own experiences. As a poet myself, I am grateful that she can write about the things that I am too scared to.

*Sylvester McNut III (@sylvestermcnutt)
I recently followed Sylvester on Instagram due to a recommendation from someone. He is into self-affirmation and making sure people know that they are worth it. I am also a part of his texting plan where he sends daily messages to start the day out right. If you ever need a quick uplifting message, check his Instagram out.

*Ivan Nuru (@ivannuru)
Ivan reminds his readers that it is okay to feel, it is okay to hurt, and we all need forgiveness sometimes. Love from others is nice but nothing can match the journey to self-love. He keeps his personal life open by including selfies on his Instagram and trying his best to reply to every comment. Currently, he only has one book out, Offering My Heart, but his talents do not go unnoticed.
Thanks for reading,
