Elizabeth Acevedo creatively creates a new type of novel. “Poet X” is a novel written through poems of the main character, Xiamora’s life. Readers get to learn about the life of a Dominican Catholic teenager raised by an incredibly strict, religious mother.

This is not your typical poetry book. It has characters and a full storyline. Xiamora expresses her deep feelings by writing them down every day. She writes about her religion, parents, school and so many more events that shape her life. This book will have you thank your parents that your parents don’t treat you like her mom does.

When Xiamora finds a boy that she wants to break the rules for, her life becomes rocky. What will her strict mother say? What will her highly religious best friend say? Life for Xiamora and her twin are not ideal for teenagers.

At first, I did not exactly get into the book but part two, I could not put it down. I read the book in a day because I had to know what was going to happen next. I rate this book 4/5 stars because I enjoyed the poetic aspect, the characters were all deeply developed, and it kept me interested.

If you are looking for a quick read that is different than any book you have read, this is the book for you.

Thanks for reading,

Elisa Reamer
