Lindy West has had to fight off a lot of internet trolls because she is a woman, fat, feminist journalist that likes to speak her mind. Growing up as a fat girl, she would try her best to stay hidden and away from crowds. As she got deeper into her career as a writer, she knew she could not stay silent for much longer. “Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman” is an autobiography written by West that explains life from her perspective and experiences she had to go through. From writing about strangers giving her diet advice to rape culture at comedy shows, this is a book that readers will not want to put down.

West does a phenomenal job at swaying the reader’s emotions. There will be laughter, tears and anger as the book progresses through her different experiences.

As a person who is defined as being skinny, I felt a little awkward at the beginning, like-oh, maybe I Shouldn’t be reading this, I don’t understand any of this. But I kept on reading and finished the entire book in a day.

This book is eye-opening and as a feminist woman who wants to be a journalist one day, it honestly scared me. A lot. It is an important read and I would say that every single person should read this book before they die.

The only alarming part of the book is the two chapters back-to-back about rape jokes at comedy shows. These can be triggering for some readers.

Thanks for reading,

Elisa Reamer

“I know that I’ve already defeated them in every substantive arena-by being smart, by being happy, by being successful, by being listened to, by being loved.”-Lindy West
